Literature Text

First love,

no matter how true or faithful

clings to you

like lacquer on a coffee table

worn down, buffed smooth

from years of abuse and neglect

but never fully chipped away

and always brushed on

fresh and wet

when given attention

my love for you

sits heavy in my wrists, my fingertips

guiding them to trace your name

over and over and over

digging deep valleys and canyons

through my neurons and synapses

so that when I die

the medical student gifted with my body

shall read our story on my grey matter

as clearly as his textbook

first love,

no matter how true or faithful

takes a different piece

from each person

serial killers take mementos

and everyone falls in love

my blood sings and slips sluggishly

when you walk into a room

branching into my lungs

with sick glee and anticipation

of your scent wafting into my nose

to bring up times of us I would forget

if forgetting was something first loves did

first love,

no matter how true or faithful

licks across your body

painting rivers like stretch marks

something that was beautiful

but that has marked you forever

no one I have loved

has made me love you less

and no one I meet

will ever be loathed more

first love,

no matter how true or faithful

is iron bars on the tongue, the lips

hijacking and rendering them loose and flaccid

that first night

your thumbs on the blades of my hips

warm southern night

stars and whispers and promises

like all the things we're told to dream of

and as each letter formed in my heart

you stole them from my lips

and I left in shackles

first love,

no matter how true or faithful

is forever

Wow.   That just gripped me from the start and took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions from elation and infatuation to grief and disgust!  When that first one carves their name in your heart, nothing can smooth it out.  I can't even say which line I liked the best--there are too many!  Wonderful!
